Using NIST AI RMF in Microsoft estates
5 September 2026
Map govern, map, measure and manage to the tools and owners you already have.
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework gives a shared vocabulary: govern, map, measure and manage. Microsoft estates need that vocabulary translated into tenants, Copilot scenarios, agents and Azure AI workloads.
Govern is the operating cadence and ownership map. Without named accountability, the other functions become project artefacts.
Map is inventory and context. What systems, data classes, roles and external dependencies sit around each use case. Estate reviews accelerate this when documentation is thin.
Measure joins evaluation, monitoring, adoption and cost. Choose measures that executives will actually review monthly. Perfect metrics that never appear in a decision forum are ornamental.
Manage is action. Risk acceptance, remediation, training and design changes. The action register is the heart of manage. Kiniza tracks owners and overdue items as a first-class concern.
Do not invent a parallel bureaucracy beside Microsoft controls you already licence. Purview, Entra, Defender and admin centre signals should feed the same scorecard where they are relevant.
Sector obligations still apply. NIST AI RMF is a scaffold, not a replacement for regulated requirements. Map your obligations explicitly during Assess.
Pilot-to-production gates are a practical manage control. Promotion criteria reduce the habit of calling every experiment a success.
Documentation should be light enough to maintain. A living service record beats a one-off compliance binder.
If you need help joining NIST language to Microsoft reality, book a briefing. We will keep it practical.
Practical next steps stay person-driven. Book a free briefing at hello@kiniza.co.uk if you want a working session on how direction, plans and tasks connect in your estate.
