Building agents with guardrails

12 September 2026

Useful agents start from a specific problem and agreed acceptance criteria, not a desire to appear advanced.

Agent projects fail when they begin with a platform tour. Begin with the problem, the user, the data boundaries and the definition of done.

Acceptance criteria should include quality, safety, cost expectations and handover. If those are vague, the build will expand quietly.

Guardrails are design inputs. Identity, data access, logging and human review points belong in the first sprint, not a late compliance pass.

Federated ownership applies. Enterprise standards set the floor. Use-case owners own outcomes and day-to-day quality.

Specialist build days are for scoped backlog items. Larger builds need a project proposal. Written agreement before extra work protects both sides.

Evaluation is part of build. Test with realistic tasks. Capture failure modes. Decide what must be true before production.

Operate should receive the agent with monitoring and owners. Build without run is how demos become liabilities.

Roadmap awareness helps when you depend on Copilot Studio or related Microsoft capabilities still rolling out. Plan contingencies.

FinOps for agents includes consumption and maintenance time. Cheap to demo can be expensive to run.

Bring a problem, not a feature list. We will help you decide whether to Build, buy or wait.
